Tricky numbers
Numbers can be tricky. On the one hand, they are simply numbers. On the other hand, they have meanings. In the passage below, I use these expressions a lot.
Many people consider themselves number one, the most important person. They are always looking out for number one and taking care of number one. It is as if they are the one and only person on Earth. Some people however, are not so self-centered. My brother is such a person. It is true – no joke. I am not trying to kid.
First, you have to understand that my brother is one in a million. He is such a nice person. All his friends like him. They consider him their best friend. Recently, my brother had a bad day at the office. It was just one of those days. Nothing went right. So he stopped at a local bar to have a quick drink after leaving work. Soon his quick one turned into one too many.
As my brother was leaving, his friends became concerned. One by one, they asked him if he was able to drive home safely. He recognizes he has had too much alcohol to drink. So he accepted an offer for a ride home from a female friend.
At one time in the past, my brother had been in love with this woman, who is a great person -- kind, thoughtful and intelligent -- all good qualities rolled up into one. But sadly their relationship did not work. However, they are still friends. And because my brother had been kind to her, she felt that one good turn deserves another. He was good to her and she wanted to help him in return. So she drove him home.
If my brother had driven home from the bar that night, he might have been killed in a car crash. Thankfully he made it home safely. And, he and the woman are back to square one. They are back to where they started – being friends.
21. Which of the following can best describe how my brother did his work
A. He did well. B. He did smoothly. C. He got many troubles. D. He got a higher place.
22. My brother’s friends worried about him and suggested a lift because__________.
A. his car stopped in the local bar
B. they want to give him a chance to be with his beloved girl
C. he drank much and cannot drove home safely
D. the girl wanted to help him in return
23. The girl drove my brother home because________.
A. other people asked her to do so
B. she is a perfect girl
C. she still loved him
D. good deeds brings good returns
24. What can we infer from the passage
A. The number one people is the one and only people on earth
B. Self-centered people are welcomed so people all behave like that
C. The population of people like my brother is small
D. My brother likes kidding me
B
As you read, remember: gifts from the heart are the best ones you’ll ever receive.
According to legend(传说), a young man while moving about the desert came across a spring(泉) of delicious clear water. The water was so sweet that he filled his leather canteen so he could bring some back to an elder who had been his teacher. After a four-day journey he gave the water to the old man who took a deep drink, smiled warmly and thanked his student for the sweet water. The young man returned to his village with a happy heart.
Later, the teacher let another student taste the water. He spat it out, saying it was very smelly. It had become no longer fresh because of the old leather container. The student asked his teacher: “Master, the water was foul. Why did you pretend to like it ”
The teacher replied, “You only tasted the water. I tasted the gift. The water was simply the container for an act of loving-kindness and nothing could be sweeter.”
I think we understand this lesson best when we receive gifts of love from young children. Whether it’s a piece of paper or a ruler, the natural and proper response is appreciation and expressed thankfulness because we love the idea within the gift.
Gratitude(感激之情) doesn’t always come naturally. Unfortunately, most children and many adults value only the thing given rather than the feeling involved in it. We should tell ourselves and teach our children about the beauty and purity of feelings and expressions of gratitude. After all, gifts from the heart are really gifts of the heart.
25. Where did the young man get the water
A. In the desert. B. In the river C. In his house D. In the field
26. Which words can be used to describe the water from the desert
A. Dirty and terrible B. Clear and sweet
C. Clean but strange D. Delicious but dirty
27. According to the passage, why do we thank a kid for his worthless gift
A. For his kind words. B. For the love from the kid.
C. For his small gift. D. For his help and courage.
28. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Importance of Gratitude B. Water from the Desert
C. Gifts from the Heart D. A Leather Container

At 111 years old, Dr. Alexander Imich of New York City has been crowned the new world's oldest living man, according to Guinness World Records.
The world's oldest living person and oldest woman, Misao Okawa of Osaka , Japan is 116 years old; she was born on March 5, 1898. The longest a person has been known to live, at least an age in the Guinness Book of World Records, is 122 years and 164 days, Louise Calment of France, who was born on Feb. 21, 1875, and died in a nursing home in Arles, France, on Aug. 4, 1997.
Imich, who says he owes his long life to good genes and a proper and healthy lifestyle, was born in Poland , on Feb. 4, 1903. He and his wife, Wela, immigrated to the United States in 1953, where his wife died in 1986. Imich has been living alone in Manhattan since she died. His motto, he told Guinness World Records, is that one should "always pursue what one loves and is passionate about."
This latest oldest-man record was proved after the passing of the prior record holder, Arturo Licata of Italy on April 24. Licata was 111 years and 357 days.
So what's the secret to such long lives While plenty of research has focused on long life and what makes centenarians(百岁老人) stand out from those who don't make it to such an old age, no single fountain of youth has turned up. Even so, both genes and a healthy lifestyle do seem to play roles. In a study detailed in 2010 in the journal Science, researchers found 150 genetic markers could predict 77 percent of the time whether a person lived into their late 90s and beyond. Another study out in 2011 also points to longevity genes, as the study participants who were 95 and older lived no more virtuous(善良) life than the general population when it came to healthy behaviors.
In 2012, researchers reported centenarians living in mountain villages on the island of Sicily had the Mediterranean diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, while low in red mean and refined food.
29. When asked the long - lived secret Imich would say _________.
A. he had a happy family life with his wife

C. he owned it to genes and a healthy lifestyle
D. he insisted on realizing his dream in his life
30. To find the secret to such long lives __________.
A. the researchers have visited many old people
B. the researchers have studied what the genes are
C. the researchers advised the old to behave well
D. the researchers visited all the living centenarians
31 It can be concluded from the passage that___________.
A. the Mediterranean diet is good for our health
B. people near Mediterranean live a long life
C. it is better to avoid meat in your everyday life
D. refined food is very harmful to health
32. Which is the proper title for the passage
A. 111-Year-Old New Yorker Is World's Oldest Man
B. The World's Oldest Woman Is 116 Years Old
C. Louise Calment Is the Living Oldest Man
D. Alexander Imich Came to The USA in 1953
D
For most of us, exercise is good for our health, and we don’t get enough of it. So the more we exercise, the better, right Not necessarily.
For a very small number of people (less than 0.5 percent of the population), physical activity becomes an addiction. How can you tell if someone is addicted Healthy exercisers organize their exercise around their lives, whereas addicts organize their lives around their exercise. People addicted to exercise continue working out despite overuse injuries, work obligations and physical exhaustion. They may become more alone as their family and friends leave because exercise is their top thing.
In the event that the exercise addict can’t squeeze in his or her routine as planned, negative moods such as anxiety, depression, and anger often come. Even with the awareness that their exercise schedule is getting out of hand, exercise addicts are either unable to stop or cut back. More repetitions are added and more miles are run, and non-fitness-related activities fall by the wayside. Time spent relaxing with friends or family is used for exercise. And exercise addicts often push past pain, injury and illness to finish a workout — even against their doctor’s orders.
It is important to stress that while exercise may represent an addictive behavior for a small number of people, habitual exercise is not natural. It’s difficult to separate a healthy habit from an obsession(着魔). Just because someone runs long distances or works out every day, it doesn’t mean that this person is addicted to exercise.
It is the compulsive(难以自拔的) drive and sick motivation to exercise that distinguishes an addicted exerciser from a regular exerciser. When exercise becomes all-consuming — you start losing friends, give up social activities or ignore work opportunities — your workout routine becomes cause for concern.
For most people, exercise is great for the body, soul and mind. But for a limited number, the healthy habit can turn into an addiction.
33. The way to tell if a person is an addiction or not is to see____________.
A. whether he do exercise or not in his free time
B. if he can arrange his life in a comfortable way
C. whether he cares for his health when tired
D. if he feels exhausted when he is doing exercise
34. When the addicts realize they are wrong __________.
A. they will change their ways of doing exercise
B. they will become worried about their health
C. they will fail to stop their exercise as usual
D. whey will spend time with their friends
35. It can be inferred from the passage that __________.
A. you should choose your eerie way carefully
B. proper exercise can do good to your health
C. the exercise additions have caused a big problem
D. doing exercise will prevent social activities
